UPDATE 8-10-09:  Cash for Clunkers is good to go and still has another billion that can be added in if they want to.  What annoys me is that everyone is panicking that there is not enough money.  It is the opposite.  The people that waited for this are now cashing in and that is why we have a huge backlog.  The congress passed another 2 billion for this program that has gone into effect.  In other words, we will have an additional 500,000 cars that will be able to be sold.  And on top of that, there is still an additional one billion dollars that can be tapped into if the government wants to.  My advice is to find the best deal on my site and go out and buy it when the senate okays this new money.

f you have found this page, then you just took your first step to owning a brand new car cheap.  President Obama signed the Cash for Clunkers bill into law on June 24th, 2009 and it is starting to roll out into the dealerships as we speak.  It is officially known as CARS by the government, but the dealers know it as Cash for Clunkers.  Many sites will just go over the law and what is common knowledge.  I actually have been with the dealers and have first hand knowledge of how this is going to help you.

OVERVIEW:  The basic thing about this deal is that you will get either $3500 or $4500 for your vehicle if it qualifies.  Now how do you know if it qualifies?  I have put a couple of links on here that takes you to official company sites that you can put in your car's information and see what it is worth AND more importantly what vehicles you can get.  What people don't understand is that you have to purchase certain vehicles that give you a certain MPG.  Fortunately, the links I provide also show you what vehicles you qualify for and how much you will get from your "clunker".  I also started a blog about my experience I am going through right now in trying to use this program with my 1990 Mustang GT convertible...check it out  here.  The following chart should help you determine if and what you qualify for.  The links are more exact.

UPDATED AUGUST 12TH: I bought an Nissan Altima Hybrid.  Read the details at the blog section.  Sweet deal.

The one place I stopped that was very interesting was the Hyundai dealer.  I saw the adds on T.V. stating that they were taking the clunkers early.  UMMMMM....NO!  They told me they were not participating because of some reason dealing with the possibilities of mistakes with the clunker trade and the dealers getting stuck.  I also was a little disheartened when I ask to see the vehicles that get 28 MPG or better and the dealer didn't know what cars attained that.  I do not know about you, but I would think that you would know everything about the vehicles you sell...or at least their gas mileage in today's gas conscience society.  Anyways, I did get some good information from him.  But not before I had to tell him that the Elantra gets 28 MPG average for the city/highway.  And he still didn't believe me until we went out and looked at the sticker.  "Well I'll be...you were right!" is a little disconcerting when someone is trying to buy a car.  Here are a couple key things to know about the CARS program or cash for clunkers as I like to call it: (see truck info below the write up)

 1.  Make sure you don't have a lien on you clunker.  In other words, if you still owe money on your clunker, then it doesn't qualify.  This shouldn't be to big of a deal though.  I talked to the bank and they told me that you could possibly pay off the balance of that car with something like a credit card and then the bank would loan you the value of the new vehicle.  This would give you excess cash so you could pay back the credit card. (If this is too confusing, just write to me in the blog section and I will tell you how I am going to do it.  I have a lien of $1,800 on my car.)

2.  Make sure it is in drivable condition.  In other words, it needs to be inspected and properly registered.

3.  As for that whole registration thing, that is another game in itself.  If you have two clunkers to get rid of, then you better hope that they are registered to two different people.  My plan was to buy a car with my clunker and then trade it in with another clunker on a new van...thus giving me $9,000 off of a van minus a little depreciation from the new car. (I figured a $1,000...maybe less.)  But, the cash for clunkers money is only allowed to be given once to each person.  So if all the clunkers are in your name, you only get one $4,500 chance.  But, if the clunkers are in your name for one and your wife's for the other, (Like my two cars are)  then you can get two $4,500 cash ins.

4.  If your car gets over 18 MPG according to the government website, then the vehicle is not eligible.

5.  You can get tax credits for certain hybrids in addition to the cash back from the dealers AND the $4,500 from the cash for clunkers program.  (I am taking it for granted that everyone will be shooting for the $4,500 not the $3,500)

6.  This program ends this November so make sure to pay off the loan early enough so you get the title before then.

MAJOR ADVICE!!!!  If taking a clunker in, strip it of all extras.  Sell them on Ebay to make this an even better deal.  I am taking out my stereo system, the chrome rims and tires (replacing them with junkyard rims/tires), and the fog lights.  These items will net me over $1,000 on the market...making this cash for clunkers deal even sweeter.  Remember, it is getting crushed after you take it in.  The dealers don't care.

How It Works:  Using my mustang example, I will receive $3500 or $4500 depending on which car I buy.  What I am doing is finding the best deal I can before the clunker trade in.  I will use a Ford Focus that I have just looked at. (No...I am not going from a mustang gt con. to that...just an example:)) The focus I found was $15000 at one place and the same car was only $14000 at the other.  The difference was because one dealer make their money on volume while the other uses sales techniques to get people to pay more.  The two places are about 120 miles apart so not everyone knows about the cheaper place.  Anyways, I will get $3000 back from Ford and $4500 back from the clunkers program.  That leaves me with only $6500 to finance!  Here's the best part, since it is a new vehicle, it qualifies for the 4.9% 72 month loan program through Ford. (I don't work for Ford...just happen to be there today...I also stopped at Nissan, but they had no clue about the clunkers program...asked me if I wanted a used car for the deal...clunkers make you buy new...so sad!)  So basically, you will knock $4500 or $3500 in addition to the offers that the car dealers are giving.  I know GM has some sweet deals with loyalty programs + cash back.  Ford is giving anywhere from $1500 to $8100 in cash back offers on top of the clunker deal.

I can truly say that this is the deal you have been waiting for if you have a car that qualifies and is a piece of crap.  If your car is valued over $3500 to $4500 then this deal does nothing for you.  The most you get is $4500 and you would be better off just doing a trade in.  But if you have a car that will need a ton to pass inspection or is ready for the junk yard, then this is the deal for you.  Based on the above scenario, you payments could be under $100 a month with full warranty!  Now you know why this is going to be huge.

WARNING:  Don't buy a junkyard car thinking you can trade it in.  All vehicles must have been registered and insured for at least one year by the person applying.
